Tulum: A Bohemian Paradise on the Mexican Rivera

Introduction

Tulum, a coastal town nestled on the Yucatán Peninsula, has become a global hotspot for its stunning beaches, ancient Mayan ruins, and vibrant bohemian atmosphere. With its laid-back vibe, delicious cuisine, and endless opportunities for adventure, Tulum offers something for every traveler.

Getting There

Tulum has recently opened its new airport; however, flights are somewhat limited so the next closest and widely available international airport to Tulum is Cancún International Airport. From there, you can take a bus, taxi, or rent a car to reach Tulum. The journey takes approximately 2 hours.  Renting a car is probably a smart decision as there is currently no Uber in Tulum (rumor is coming soon) and the taxi fares are outrageous.

Where to Stay

Tulum offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit every budget and preference. Here are a few popular choices:

Santorini: Sun-Kissed Cliffs, Azure Waters, and Aegean Magic

Santorini isn't just another Greek island; it's a sensory explosion painted in cobalt blues and blinding whites. From the moment you step off the ferry and witness the iconic caldera (volcanic crater) cradling the Aegean Sea, you know you've entered a realm of postcard-perfect beauty. But Santorini's magic goes beyond Instagram-worthy vistas. It's a place where ancient whispers mingle with modern luxury, where volcanic earth nourishes vineyards producing divine wines, and where laughter spills from tavernas filled with the intoxicating aroma of grilled octopus.

When staying on the Islands be sure to read reviews of hotels and I’ll paste my experience here on my most recent visit which wasn’t great at the  Kasimatis by Pearl.  While the views were amazing be aware of lots and lots of stair climbing along with some ant invasions and electrical issues.

Wandering Through Whitewashed Wonderlands:

Oia, perched precariously on the caldera rim, is the undisputed star. Narrow, flower-draped alleys meander past whitewashed houses adorned with sapphire domes, each a canvas for breathtaking sunsets. Get lost in the labyrinthine charm, stumble upon hidden art galleries, and soak in the panoramic views that ignite your soul. Don't miss Fira, the lively capital, where shops teem with local crafts and cafes buzz with life. For a quieter escape, Imerovigli offers serenity and stunning caldera views, minus the crowds.

To enjoy some relaxation time booking a day at the 41 beach club might just be the thing. This gorgeous black sand beach was absolutely wonderful.  The food is great and renting a cabana is highly recommended for some breaks and naps away from the sun.

Beyond the Clifftops:

Santorini is more than just cliffside villages. Hike down the switchbacks to the volcanic beaches, their black sand contrasting vividly with the turquoise waters. Dive into the crystal-clear Aegean, snorkel amidst vibrant coral reefs, or kayak into hidden coves, each revealing a new facet of the island's beauty. History buffs will revel in Akrotiri, an ancient Minoan settlement buried by volcanic ash, offering a glimpse into a civilization frozen in time. Wine lovers, rejoice! Vineyards blanket the island, and tastings with caldera views are a must. Savor the unique volcanic notes of Santorini's Assyrtiko grape, a taste of the island's fiery past.

A great way to get views of the Island and enjoy a romantic sunset dinner on a sailboat is to book a sunset cruise with Angel Sailing.  The owner/captain is very knowledgeable about the area and takes you to some unique spots to swim, snorkel and enjoy the views.  This is one of the most affordable options available and is very private with small groups so it's well worth the cost as the service was amazing.

A Feast for the Senses:

Santorini's culinary scene is a symphony of fresh, local ingredients. Feta cheese crumbles atop sun-ripened tomatoes, grilled octopus glistens with olive oil, and succulent seafood platters arrive brimming with the day's catch. Don't miss the chance to indulge in fava bean puree, a Santorini staple, and pair it with a glass of the island's renowned vinsanto, a sweet dessert wine. As the sun dips below the horizon, settle into a cliffside taverna, clink glasses with newfound friends, and let the Aegean magic wash over you.

One highly recommended restaurant is the beautiful Naos located in Oia.  It is on the pricey side but the food and views are well worth it. I would highly recommend a reservation time around sunset as you can’t beat the views from this gorgeous rooftop 5 star establishment.

Santorini's charm is undeniable, a kaleidoscope of experiences waiting to be savored. Whether you seek romance, adventure, or simply to soak in the beauty of the Aegean, this sun-kissed island has something for everyone. So, pack your bags, your sense of wonder, and get ready to fall in love with Santorini.
